If you are wondering whether the TVG sportsbook is a reputable place to bet on US horse racing, you’ve come to the right place. At RacingPicks, we review the leading US sportsbooks, shining a spotlight on those that offer the best horse racing betting markets for American fans that watch the horses at the racetrack or at home on TV.

What Do They Offer?

You’ll be pleased to hear that TVG is widely regarded as the number-one platform for betting on horse racing in the US. TVG is part of the Television Games Network, with this arm of the network helping to provide a dedicated television channel for American horse racing, as well as pre-race betting.

Today, the TVG Network works to live stream races online and broadcast them via TVG and TVG2 on television from hundreds of racetracks worldwide, not only in the US.

There are a huge range of horse racing betting markets to choose from at TVG, as you would expect from a sportsbook that professes to be a leading name in horse racing betting.

Typically, the most popular markets for TVG horse racing surround the Win, Place and Show bets. A Win (WN) bet requires you to bet on the eventual winner of an upcoming horse race. A Place (PL) bet requires you to pick a horse that will finish either second or first. Finally, a Show (SH) bet has three winning outcomes, requiring you to pick a horse that will finish either third, second or first.

The TVG Network also offers a good selection of ‘exotic’ horse racing wagers for US bettors looking to maximize their profits from small stakes, including:

  • Exacta Exacta bets require punters to select two horses in an upcoming race to finish first and second respectively.
  • Trifecta Trifecta bets require punters to choose three horses in an upcoming race that will win, place and show respectively.
  • Superfecta Superfecta bets are the most challenging type of bets offered at TVG, requiring punters to select the four horses in an upcoming race that will finish in the top four places.

The TVG horse racing platform is also well-renowned for its speciality wagers too. These are unique, one-of-a-kind bets that are often only available at specific racetracks or operators. Here is a taste of the specialty horse racing bets you can find on the TVG network:

  • Jockey 7 Exclusive to race meetings at Kentucky Downs, you can place Jockey 7 wagers on a specific jockey, accumulating points across each race based on the jockey’s performance. The punter with the highest points at the end of the race meeting wins the jackpot.
  • Stronach 5 Exclusive for wagers placed on races at Stronach Group’s five racetracks, select five winners to happen throughout the day to win the jackpot.
  • Meadowlands Survivor Pick ten winners for the first ten races of the day. The last remaining “perfect” ticket wins the jackpot.
  • Fortune 6 Select six potential winners of back-to-back races, available at many racetracks across the US.

Where Can You Bet?

As the TVG horse racing platform is licensed and located in the US, it’s unsurprising that TVG is available to bettors in a number of states. Although legislation on online betting is steadily being relaxed, it is by no means universal. This means that some states are yet to approve of horse racing betting as a legal pursuit.

It’s probably easier for us to list the US states that do not currently allow residents access to the TVG network:

  • Alabama
  • Alaska
  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • Kansas
  • Maine
  • Michigan
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • Nevada
  • North Carolina
  • Oklahoma
  • South Carolina
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Wisconsin
  • Washington DC

Deposit Methods

Another benefit of betting on US horse racing and meetings overseas with TVG is the number of deposit methods accepted to fund your TVG account. Some of these methods are free, while others may incur small charges:

  • Debit or credit card Deposit up to $5,000 monthly with VISA or MasterCard. It is possible to increase your deposit limits.
  • BetCash This electronic transfer of funds from your bank account is rapid and free.
  • Online bill pay Available to residents with bank accounts that offer an online bill pay feature.
  • Wire transfer These transactions are free for depositing over $1,000, but will cost $15 for anything less than $1,000.
  • Check or Money Order Send a check or money order to TVG’s address supplied, writing your account number on the memo line where applicable.
  • Cash (at TVG Trackside) Cash wagers are accepted at a host of racetracks where TVG is present.

Pros of TVG

  • Unrivalled coverage of US racetracks
  • A highly reputable name in US horse racing

  • Mobile apps available

Cons of TVG

  • Unavailable in some US states
  • More overseas racetrack coverage would be better

Mobile App Rating

It’s impossible to give the TVG app a 5/5 rating, simply because it doesn’t offer a dedicated mobile app for Android users. If you own an iPhone or iPad you are in luck as TVG has, for some strange reason, decided to build an app for iOS devices only.

However, it must be said that Android users can still access the TVG website on mobile, which is fully responsive and optimized for mobile use.

Rating: 4/5

Desktop Rating

The TVG website is very easy to navigate thanks to the continually updated list of upcoming races on the left-hand navigation bar. You can see the grade of races, the race track and whether or not it is available to stream live on TVG or TVG2.

Full racecards are well laid out and unfussy, giving you all the information you need to make an informed wager, without overbearing you.

On the whole, the TVG horse racing network is the most comprehensive and professional in the US. If TVG offered a dedicated Android mobile app we'd be in love
