Handicapper Tom Dodd previews Thursday’s meet at Churchill Downs and has three picks worth of a wager.
Churchill Downs R4
The first three races at Churchill don’t appeal as betting mediums, but there’s certainly an angle in race four that catches the eye. FIXICO has had just two lifetime starts but is definitely open to more improvement that most of the field here. Though beaten twelve lengths last time at Arlington, there was plenty of be encouraged about for connections in that run and if it brings him forward (as it should) he can take some stopping here over a track and trip that should hold no fears.
Churchill Downs R6
There’s a clear standout in race six and it’s in the shape of JESSUP. Steve Asmussen’s three-year-old is one-for-one in his short career to date and it’ll be a surprise (and a disappointment) if he doesn’t make it two-for-two today. Jessup made a striking impression on racecourse debut when winning by five lengths at Indiana Grand and while that isn’t the strongest form on offer here, the visuals tell you he could be a smart one.
Churchill Downs R8
Despite being a beaten favorite last time out, there’s still plenty to like about the chances of FRONT MAN who definitely brings the best recent form to the table here in race eight. The opposition don’t hold too many fears for this three-year-old and Corey Lanerie can guide him home from gate seven.
