The early betting for Friday’s Kentucky Oaks, the 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-old fillies has been dominated by one horse only, the mighty Gamine. According to Oddschecker in the UK, nearly 80% of wagers for the race have been placed on Bob Baffert’s daughter of Into Mischief since August 1. And it’s really not hard to see why.
Gamine really landed on the scene in June with a destruction of the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes at Belmont, when winning (what is usually a competitive race) by an incredible 19 lengths! Since then she’s been earmarked as the one to beat in the Oaks.
In her final prep run for the big one on Friday, she sauntered home by 7 lengths at Saratoga in the Longines Test Stakes and this success did nothing to put anyone off her Oaks’ chances. She rates the 4/6 favorite with the UK oddsmakers at time of writing.
She does, however, have one big rival and one potential obstacle in her way…. Swiss Skydiver. Ken McPeek’s superstar filly has had a seriously busy campaign which even included a battle with the colts and comes into the race off an impressive success in the Alabama Stakes. In a usual year, she’d be clear favorite for a race like the Oaks, but bettors and bookmakers agree on her being a clear second-best. In the markets, she’s the second favorite and only 12.95% of bets (with Oddschecker) have been wagered on her.
