Andrew Champagne previews the late pick four at Delta on Monday.
Delta Downs kicks off another week of racing with a nine-race program on Monday afternoon. The late Pick Four starts in the sixth, and I’ll attack it with a $25 ticket that begins with a popular single. Let’s take a look!
RACE #6: I wish I could get cute in this allowance race for older fillies and mares. However, I think this one goes through #1 ASHLEY’S NEW SHOES, who’s 2-for-2 at Delta Downs since being claimed by Karl Broberg in October.
This is a slight jump in class for her, but her local races have been very impressive and the connections have been winning everything in sight this meet. Ashley’s New Shoes has a ton in her favor, and I think she’ll be a formidable favorite in the opening leg.

RACE #7: I have no such conviction about this event for female claimers going five furlongs. If I scratch down elsewhere, I may very well advise a ticket where the “all” button is punched. As it stands now, I’m five-deep, and my top pick is a big price on the morning line.
#4 GOLDEN BET thumped weaker foes by nearly five lengths last time out and has a history of running well at this route. This will be her second start off a long layoff, and I think she’s got a chance to take a step forward. If she does, that 15-1 morning line price will prove to be a pretty significant overlay.
I’ll also use #1 HURRICANE TIZWAY, #3 GRILLIN, #6 STARBUCK LUCK, and #7 WILD MALLORY. This is a tough event to handicap, with runners moving in many different directions on the class ladder. I’m hoping that I’ve found the winner going five-deep in what hit me as one of the toughest races on the card.
RACE #8: Older milers will go postward for this one, and this is the first of back-to-back races that drew full fields. In this case, I think the two major players drew outside posts, and I’m using them both.
#9 BROAD DECISION and #10 NOW YOU RULES, in fact, exit the same race against better competition held just a few weeks ago. I prefer Broad Decision, who made a middle move in that race and flattened out late, but Now You Rules may improve getting off the rail and adding a furlong of distance.
RACE #9: We finish things off with a maiden claiming race that drew 10 runners, two also-eligibles, and several first-time starters. I may be using as many as five if my top selection is able to run.
#12 JULIO CHOICE needs two scratches to run, but if she’s allowed to compete, I think she’ll be the one to beat. Her return off a significant layoff last month was just fine, as she dueled into the stretch against similar foes before fading to third. I think she’ll be a bit sharper second off the bench, and if she gets into this race, it wouldn’t surprise me if she’s ready to step forward.
If Julio Choice scratches, I’ll still be four-deep. #1 KELLYS THE BOSS, #2 TWEETIE, #3 KLEINMEISTER, and #6 GO FIGURE are all on my ticket, and the last of those runners figures to be favored. However, Kellys the Boss and Tweetie are both first-time starters, and neither would have to be much in order to shake things up at a price.
