Tuesday Free Horse Racing Picks: Delta Downs Late Pick Four

Free Horse Racing Picks at Delta Downs - Tuesday January 19

Andrew Champagne previews the late pick four at Delta on Tuesday.

I’m headed to Delta Downs for a preview of Tuesday’s late Pick Four sequence. It starts in the sixth of nine races on the program, and I think this is a sequence that can be played with a budget-friendly ticket. Mine, for instance, costs just $8, and here’s how I’ll attack it.

RACE #6: Older fillies and mares will go postward for the opening leg, which has drawn a field of nine. The morning line man sees this as a two-horse race, though, and I’m inclined to agree.

#8 MISS MABELEE is my top selection. She ran a good second last time out against similar company, and that effort came when she rated well off the pace, which isn’t necessarily where she wants to be. I think she’ll be up closer to the pace here, and such a journey could give her a big shot.

#3 MISS SOONER GIRL is the morning line favorite, and she’ll do her best running late. On ability, she more than fits, and I’m using her, but I also can’t bring myself to single a one-run closer on a bullring track. If she wins, I’ll be alive, but the 2-1 morning line does hit me as an underlay for win bettors out there.

RACE #7: This race hit me as the toughest leg of the sequence. It’s an optional claiming event for fillies and mares, and while trainer Karl Broberg has a formidable entry I need to use, there are three others I’ll have on my ticket as well.

#1 ALOHA BETTY and #1A PRETTY BRITCHES could both win. The former won a rarely-seen five-sixteenths race last month, while the latter set a hot pace in a $60,000 stakes race before fading to fourth. Tim Thornton is listed as the rider for both horses, and that means one may scratch barring a jockey switch, but I can’t ignore the Broberg barn here.

#3 NAUTICAL GEM, #4 MISS BITTERS, and #6 SOUTHERN BEAUTY are on my ticket as well. Miss Bitters, in particular, intrigues me at her 15-1 morning line price. She hasn’t run in a while, but she does her best work over this track, with three wins and a second in seven local starts. She appears to be working well, and her best effort would put her right there.

RACE #8: My single comes here, in a $5,000 claiming race for older horses going the two-turn, 6 1/2-furlong route. It drew a full field, and I’m hoping that drives the price up a bit on my best bet of the sequence.

#2 MINE INSPECTOR was very, very good last time out, when he cruised to win by nearly five lengths at this route. He’s at his best when he’s on or near the lead, and I think his form is on an upswing after a trainer switch late last season. If he gets his preferred trip pressing the pace, I think he’ll be very tough to beat.

RACE #9: The Tuesday finale will see 10 claimers go five furlongs. There’s a short-priced favorite in here, and I’m using him, but there’s a potential value play that also piques my interest.

#7 MALIBU JACK did everything but win at this level and route last time out. He dueled throughout and was beaten a head two weeks ago, and he beat that day’s third-place finisher by more than five lengths. A similar effort would make this gelding a handful, and I certainly cannot ignore him.

I’m also using #2 LAST PAYCHECK, who broke his maiden by way of a disqualification last time out. He was coming off a significant break in that race, and I think he could absolutely improve second off the bench. This is his first start against winners, but it’s not like there are any monsters in here, and forward progression could make him a player at a bit of a price.
