Free Horse Racing Picks at Gulfstream Park - Wednesday February 3

Andrew Champagne previews the late pick four at Gulfstream Park on Wednesday.

Wednesday starts another week of racing at Gulfstream Park, and handicappers will be greeted with a 10-race program in the Sunshine State. The late Pick Four, which consists entirely of races for fillies and mares, kicks off in the seventh, and I’ll look to give out a winning ticket in this space for the second straight day. I’ve got a $36 ticket, and here’s how I’ll attack it.

RACE #7: We’ll start the sequence with a $16,000 claiming event for older fillies and mares on the turf. It attracted a field of eight horses, and I’m going three-deep.

#2 CODRINGTON is a logical favorite. She takes a big drop in class and was reasonably competitive against claimers running for tags twice what she’ll run for Wednesday, and it certainly seems like there’ll be enough speed signed on to set up for her late kick. She may not provide the most value at or near her morning line price, but her usual race would give her a big shot.

#3 OBLIO’S WISH and #7 NYMUE’S TREASURE are on my ticket as well. The former hasn’t won in a while but has back form over this turf course, while the latter was second in her first start at this level last time out and attracts Luis Saez to ride.

RACE #8: 3-year-old fillies will take center stage here, and there are some promising Florida-bred horses set to go postward. I’m going three-deep, and my top pick is actually a big price on the morning line.

I’d be surprised if #1 TO A T is 15-1 when they load into the gate. However, if she DOES approach that price, she could be a tremendous overlay. She found a mile to be too long last time out, and I think the cutback to 5 1/2 furlongs will help her considerably. Her two-back win was fine, and Jose Ortiz has been enlisted to ride for trainer Saffie Joseph.

I’m also using #8 BATTLE CRY and #9 R ADIOS JERSEY. Battle Cry was a decent third against similar last time out and may be a bit of a price, and R Adios Jersey exits a runaway debut win and has been working well ahead of her first try against winners.

RACE #9: I found this optional claimer to be the toughest race of the sequence. I’m four-deep here, and I see this race completely differently than the morning line man does.

#1 CRUMB BUN is 12-1 on that line, but she exits the Grade 3 Rampart, which was won by next-out Grade 3 Houston Ladies Classic winner Letruska. This isn’t an easy spot, but the waters are certainly shallower here, and she ran too well here last spring and summer for me to just toss her. At her likely price, I think she’s a must-use.

I’ll also use #4 HOPEFUL GROWTH, #6 LAKE AVENUE, and #8 FINDING FAME. Lake Avenue is a tricky read. I needed her very badly in last year’s Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks, where the filly named after a street in Saratoga that once housed a newspaper I worked for chased a loose-on-the-lead Swiss Skydiver home, and this will be just her second start since May. However, she’s got a very strong work tab at Payson Park ahead of her 2021 debut, and perhaps she’s ready to fully live up to her lofty pedigree.

RACE #10: We’ll finish things off with a maiden race for 3-year-old fillies going 7 1/2 furlongs on the lawn. I think the morning line favorite may be the shortest price in the sequence, and she’s my top pick.

#4 SIMPLY THE BEST raced very well off a brief freshening for the red-hot Danny Gargan barn a few weeks ago. She dueled early and was beaten just a half-length after re-rallying late, and I think the stretch-out will help her. She debuted going two turns at Saratoga, which tells me they think she has some stamina, and I certainly think she’ll sit a front-running trip given her early zip.

I’m also going to throw in #6 CAUSINGAHULLBALOO, a filly that’s taken big leaps forward in all three of her prior starts. She was a decent third at this route last time out, and that was against open maidens. She drops back in to face state-bred here and gets Lasix for the first time, and between those factors and the positive trajectory she’s shown, I think there’s a lot to like.
